New Mexico is home to two Department of Energy-funded laboratories: Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories. The Air force Research Laboratory (AFRL), New Mexico Tech, and New Mexico State University also conduct research in many fields of energy. The Energy, Climate, and Infrastructure Security (ECIS) Strategic Management Unit (SMU) is at the forefront of research into energy alternatives that will help the nation reduce its dependence on oil and coal and to combat the effects of climate change. Sandia’s long history with geothermal, solar, and wind research has seen a vast increase in effort and intensity over a decade.

The City of Santa Fe is 46 square miles with a population of nearly 70,000. Santa Fe is working to reduce energy demand, promote clean renewable energy, and improve the efficiency of city facilities and operations. The City of Santa Fe’s main goal is for a blended reduction in energy use of 20 percent by 2020 at all of its buildings. The City further commits to work with the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce to identify private sector businesses owners who are willing to commit to similar reduction goals. Specifically, the City is committed to the following improvements at its facilities:  the installation of renewable energy, upgrading HVAC equipment, installing high efficiency boilers, and upgrading building structures which will include walls, floors, doors and roofs.
