San Francisco Drought Causes Sewer Difficulties

There are concerns about sewer draining properly due to weather conditions in San Francisco. Usually, the wet weather would cause more reason to pay closer attention, however, due to the drought, the dryness keeps sewage in the system that is simply not draining properly. When materials don’t flush out it causes corrosion. San Francisco has approximately 1000 miles of sewer pipe which can be dated back to the 1850’s when California became a state and people were panning for gold. That’s an impressive sewer system, albeit aging.
While the City is fastidious with monitoring sewer repairs to keep things running smoothly, there is also an awareness of the time needed to make changes to the existing pipe due to the enormity of the task. There are only 15 miles of pipe that the City can replace a year due to the budget. Repairs will continue to be made as needed to ensure the sewer system remains in good working condition.
