San Francisco has recently completed two substantial sewer pipeline projects. These projects are part of the $4.8 billion Water System Improvement Program (WSIP). The San Francisco Regional Water System is responsible for serving 2.6 million people across the Bay Area, including San Francisco and parts of Silicon Valley. In the East Bay, a $54 million San Antonio Backup Pipeline Project included construction of a new 1.3-mile pipeline. These upgrades allow for water to travel to and from the San Antonio Reservoir at the same time, which enhances San Francisco Utilities operational resilience and minimizes the risk of service disruption. Nearby, the San Mateo’s sewer and wastewater treatment plant is initiating a Clean Water Program by way of a 10-year capital improvement plan to make sure the city’s 234 miles of sewer pipeline and its treatment plant are up to par during storms and can withstand the force of an earthquake. However, there is still uncertainty as to whether these upgrades will provide reassurance during the ongoing El Niño storms.
